About Boston
An economic and cultural anchor of New England, Boston is the capital of Massachusetts and one of the oldest cities in the United States. The site of several key events of the American Revolution, Boston is now a modern hub for health care, biotechnology, technology, and academia, layered on top of a rich literary history. With a population of nearly 700,000 living in 23 official neighborhoods, Boston is the state’s largest city, situated roughly between Massachusetts Bay on the east, the Charles River to the north, and numerous suburban communities fanning out to the south and west.
Boston is a nexus for world-class medical care and research. About 20 hospitals and medical centers lie within the city limits. That, along with its high concentration of colleges and universities – 30 within the city limits and 118 in the greater Boston area, if you’re counting – contribute to Boston’s status as the number-one city receiving NIH funding for 24 consecutive years.
Explore such Revolutionary-era sites as the Freedom Trail, 2.5-mile red-brick walking path through Boston’s historic neighborhoods that tells the story of the American Revolution. Starting at Boston Common, the trail continues to such sites as Old Corner Bookstore, Old South Meeting House site of Boston Tea Party, Paul Revere House, the Boston Massacre site, USS Constitution, Bunker Hill monument, and Faneuil Hall – known as the Cradle of Liberty for its centrality in nurturing participatory democracy. Today, the historic site adjoins Faneuil Hall Marketplace, home of Quincy Market, dating from the early 19th century and now home to a lively assortment of shops, restaurants, and exhibitions – as well the go-to place for street performers in nice weather. While there, check out the nearby Haymarket, a centuries-old outdoor produce market and cultural cornerstone of the city (but, for the uninitiated, be sure to follow the unofficial rules).
See more history! Head on over to the Black Heritage Trail, a 1.6-mile walking tour exploring the history of Boston’s 19th century African American community, or the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum to see a reenactment.
Take advantage of Boston’s vibrant and varied music scene — which includes the world-famous Boston Symphony Orchestra at Symphony Hall — and such cultural offerings as the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Gardner Museum, New England Aquarium, and John F. Kennedy Presidential Library.
Weather-permitting, enjoy some outdoor time on the Charles River Esplanade, which stretches for three miles along the Charles River on the Boston side, between the Museum of Science and the Boston University Bridge. Or stroll a portion of the Boston HarborWalk, a 40-mile walkway winding through the city’s waterfront neighborhoods, passing through Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park and numerous wharfs before curving along the harbor into the vibrant Seaport District, where the THT 2023 is taking place.
Boston likes to preserve its landmarks. So don’t forget to check out a tour of the oldest active U.S. ballpark Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. Prefer architectural history? The South End Historic District is the largest surviving contiguous Victorian-era neighborhood in the United States.
Explore Boston’s shopping and dining scenes, and for fashionable shopping, get on over to Newbury Street/Back Bay.
